I think though this also comes down to the type of position you're applying for. I have written tens of thousands of lines of SQL using some very complex logic. It would be inappropriate for an assessment for the positions I am applying for, however if it was a basic entry level job and you have no experience, well then that might be different and you might have to get good at doing an assessment.

My workflow is whiteboard, OCR, compile. level 1 Competence is a metric that has taken a backseat in corporate hiring criteria for many decades. level 1 Somewhat misleading. More accurately they test both performance anxiety and coding skills. It's not like you're getting short listed if you have no coding skills but perform well under pressure. And performing under pressure is a valuable skill, although admittedly it probably isn't that necessary for a coding job most of the time. /r/EverythingScience is the sister subreddit to /r/science.
